Until I feel like forking out a grand for a salt water iPilot, I'm going to make due with a transom mount 55# Minn Kota mounted on the bow of my new to me skiff. I should have a good 18" of shaft in the water with the 42" shaft extended so I think I'm OK there--but not by much. I thought the mount would be pretty easy with a couple of blocks of marine plywood, but the rolled gunnels aren't helping.

The motor bracket is shallow, and as you can see in the first pic, there's precious little bite area on the inside of the gunnel. I am thinking I will have to fabricate something with a better mounting area above the gunnel, and really want to avoid cutting into the boat. Suggestions, especially through experience? Thanks!
