Hey guys, A friend loaned me a vise until mine shows up in the mail so I thought I'd give it a go on a windy day. Feedback no matter how harsh is much appreciated as these are the first two flies I've ever attempted. I'm still in Florida so these will be for snook/reds/sea trout until June when I join you in WA.
They look tasty to me. Good ties. They look just like the pictures in the books. Good job. Now go get 'em wet. Eric
Look like fish food to me. Like the man said, "go get them wet". One of the great things I like about fly fishing is all of the things you can learn from it. Being on the water and watching all of nature around you and how it reacts to other influences. I mean, you can choose between what kind of fish to pursue, how to fish the line and the flies, flat water or moving, bluebird weather or freeze your butt off cold weather, Fall colors on a stream, or spring blooms on a placid lake. So much to take in and then there is the fly dressings on cold windy and rainy days when you are stuck inside with a bunch of hooks, feathers, threads, and a libation of choice. Yep, it is an addiction and thankfully there is no known cure. :thumb:
The challenge of putting the materials in place in a manner that is pleasing to my eye is a small part of the experience of when I found the fly pleasing to a fish. THAT was the ultimate. I have a sense that your excellent start will reward you with more fun on the water. Well done.
I'd actually save the first one you tied. Years from now you'll look back and see how far you've come. Good job.
Nice flies! Just be glad you are not fishing for tailwater trout. Then you would be tying flies on a #20 hook!
Dr fly, I think sometimes, tying flies and golf have a lot in common, If I was you I would take a beginners course in fly tying fundamentals at your local fly shop before you start a bunch of bad habits. Learn how to tie body proportions wings and tails correctly, then go have fun. that's my 2 cents Carl
Wonder when Doc is going to come back and tell us how he is doing with the vise and flies. Maybe he has abandoned his profession, home, goods family and all other possessions, and become a fishing bum somewhere in the caribbean.
Been tying a lot and fishing a lot for that matter. Simple stuff, but the simple stuff is what works when the water is 82 and clear and the fish are hungry. Going to be a whole new world when I get to WA!
Bring warm clothing. It snowed here today. Didn't stick but it was white and big coming down. A steelheaders dream. Delighted that the fishing is apparently going well for you.
It really doesn't matter what they look like, as long as the fish like them and think it would make a good snack.
That is true. Funny how I use to buy, or tie up, flies that looked buggy. Most flies catch fisherman more than fish I think.
I think that is true of all flies and artificial offerings. Another thing that makes me go WHAT, is all of the gadgets that are offered in the fly catalogs. Any sports catalog for that matter. When I started flyfishing, I bought every new gadget that came along, just knowing it would put me on the mother lode of fish. All it really did was empty my wallet and fill my basement and garage with stuff that I don't use or need.
