Hello all, my son is eight and he is ready to do his first short overnight backpacking trip. I was thinking we might go out this weekend and try to camping along the Umtaneum creek trail. If anybody has any advice or good spring backpacking ideas please let me know. Thank Jason.

Packwood Lake usually is open earlier than most Cascade trails. Good overnight destination for first timers and kids -- little elevation gain, just 5 miles in, camping by a nice big lake. Good fishing opportunities. Might be best to wait until at least mid-May for this one, though.

A great resource for anyone planning hikes in Washington is the Trip Report section of the Washington Trails Association Website. Basically user-generated reports of current trail conditions:

Jason, this side of the crest has lower snow than the west, you might find some spots up Blewett Pass that'll be reachable with a shorter hike in. No fishing yet though. Hurly Creek road comes to mind.
