Cap'n Jim in SJI has been sending me impressive pics of the orcas still hanging around in late Sep. One very cool pic shows an orca blowing up the water with a salmon 8-10 ft in the air in escape mode. Those numbers above, may backup the reason the orcas are still working the salmon hwy between SJI + VI.
I hope I start to hear about everybody rippin lip off the beach.

  9. Dont hold your breath... think most of those fish are Canadian fish. Wish the news was different, but also heard that WDFW will close the Quilcene fishery on Oct. 2nd due to low return. What a bust of a season... first the early closure of Inner Elliot, Hood Canal massive fish die off, and this... time to go trout fishing I suppose.

From what I can tell in the regs, there's not even going to be a chum season on the S rivers.

    Yellowlab.
I somewhat agree with your first statement, but I also believe these fish are hugging the South side of the strait for a reason, and although a possibility, I don't think shooting across the strait into Canada is their intention. I think they would retrace the path they came from as a juvenile which would mean staying close to the shore, and not out into open water.
    It's just a theory.
On a more positive note, just read that Area 10 will reopen for Chinook on the 1st so there's an opportunity to be had.

Look at the fishing reports for Oregon there are some places that have really good runs and they are saying the eastern rivers are getting good steelhead runs, the Wallowa, Ronde and Imnaha. Fish counts going up above Sherrers falls on the Deschutes and Coho on other rivers. WE're just in the wrong place at the right time.

So the first post appeared after I wrote the second. #2 starts here Do they match at all? I erased my first post so this one will be short. Look at the reports for Oregon's forcast. They are are saying lots of fish in differnt rivers and some of the coastal bays. Thinking more than 10,000 coho passed Willamette falls. Chinnook up to 40 and 50 lbs in the bays and coastal rivers. good runs of steelhead comeing above sherars falls and over the dams headed for the Ronde and Imnaha and Wallowa. Hope they are right as they still arern't saying that the runs are above expectations. I get a partial weekly forcast for Oregon that I enjoy.

question for those with more experience than I:
If a pod of Orcas mills around an area for a whole day wouldn't one surmise that salmon would be there too?

I'll email Cap'n Jim. Seeing they're his pics. He said it's been the most amazing Sep...and Oct so far. The Orca sightings have been outstanding almost daily. I hope we're that lucky when we visit late Sep next year.
