The theme for this month is.......

The Muddler Minnow, informally known by anglers, was popularized by Montana, USA fisherman and fly tier Dan Bailey. It is now a popular pattern worldwide and is likely found in nearly every angler's fly box, in one form or another. Due to its universal appeal to game fish, the muddler minnow will remain as an integral tool in sport fishing. The versatility of the Muddler Minnow stems from this pattern's ability to mimic a variety of aquatic and terrestrial forage, ranging from sculpins, to leeches, to grasshoppers, crickets, spent mayflies, emerging green drakes, stonefly nymphs, mice, tadpoles, dace, shiners, chubs, and other "minnows," along with a host of other creatures. There are limitless material and colour variations, however the essence of the Muddler Minnow is a spun deer hair head.

My phone took a drink last night, so I have no pic as of yet...Will post one ASAP.

That is a beauty! Do you ever do it with black died deer hair to more closely imitate the black head of the october caddis?

Thanks! At the time I tied this run of muddler's, I had no black dyed deer hair. I have since acquired black, purple, and orange.

Ok - you managed to select a fly that I've never been able to get the hang of. Quite frankly, I suck at spinning & trimming deer hair. Never have been able to get things symmetrical or get a nice shape. I was going to bow out this month but decided to take the opportunity to practice. In the past week I've accumulated quite the pile of mangy attempts. This morning I finally got one that turned out better than any I've ever done. So, I'm calling it good. I decided to go with what I know to be the traditional Muddler Minnow.

    Hook: Mustad #8 2XL
    Tail: Matched Turkey Wing
Body: Gold tinsel w/ gold rib reverse wrap
    Underwing: Brown Calf Tail
    Wing: Matched Turkey Wing
    Head: Spun Natural Deer Hair

I may try to retake the photo. This one has a funky line in it for some reason.

Nice fly TD. Deer hair is definitely not my friend either. Nice work on the wing/tail as well.

Thanks. Matching the wing and tail was a chore in itself.

I like both of these a lot. Those slim sparse flies look deadly.

    Skating injured muddler thing
Part of a skating steelhead assortment I'll be bringing to the fly swap Inspired by idylwylde's quigley's dragon gurgler, they all feature reverse hooks for skating.
