Any of you who have any advice about this technique it would be greatly appreciated, particularly finishing them and dealing with finishing the front section of the fly before whip finishing off. This is one of the most frustrating situations I encounter in tying =)

My vice has a gallows tool. This tool attaches to my vice and loops around and above the jaws. It has a spring with a hackle pliers on it. This lifts and supports the wing/post so hackle can easily be wound around it and tied off. I would think that someone sells these that adapt to vices or stand alone. Jim.

I have been able to lay a thread base on the post, palmer from high to low, then it all goes to H#$% =). That appendage sounds like it could be a help though
    Thank You

PS - White Turkey tail feather fibers, left natural, have been the best post I have found so far. Depending on the fly, the smaller the hook, the better suited this material is for the post

I don't tie my post on the top of the hook, I use white antron( the fine stuff) and I fold it around the hook from below, leaving it long so that theres something to grab, I trim it later, I then make a couple crosswraps and then 5 or 6 turns around the post itself, this makes for a very strong wing post. I tie the post in like a thorax dry set back from the eye and after winding the hackle I take a couple of turns around the hackle end and then a couple around the wingpost around the last turn of hackle, dub up to the eye and whip finish, by doing this I've found that the parachute wings usually outlast the rest of the fly.
