The Peak base is awesome and can be had for $40. It is white so it is easy to see things on it, it has a larger footprint than most and is heavier than most for better stability. I use one on my Renzetti Traveler and it is awesome. I bought a cheap generic first and it was a total waste of money.
If you have any metal fab shops near you, beg to dig in their steel drop bin(try to get it for free). Especially if they have a burn table, plasma or laser. They throw away lots of drops or interior cuts. get a piece of 5/8 to 3/4 thick mild steel (it will be a little heavy. Sand it down, come in 3/4 inch from an edge, then drill a 3/8 thru hole. Now from the edge you came in from, on center, drill and tap for a 3/16 coarse screw at 90 degrees into the 3/8 thru hole. Paint it, then put a 3/16 screw into the threaded hole
