Platte River Spider

Discussion in 'Fly Tying' started by KevinLS, Feb 17, 2014.

  1. Thanks to Jeff Dodd (via Blue) for turning me on to this fly. I knew once I saw it I had to tie it. I had to substitute orange wing for yellow, looks a little bright but I'll be stopping at the fly shop soon for yellow. In this fly (my first) the wing looks to small compared to the fly. I'll make the wing a little longer, but the main issue was the marabou was too long. It calls for marabou that is 1.5x the length of the shank but mine is more 2x. That sort of throws off the proportions. Also my wings twisted a little bit.

Any advice on finding shorter marabou length? I figured I could cut it and use a dubbing loop to set the length myself... Or make the wing longer to fix proportions but then I'm worried about short strikes.
