Fishing in Yellowstone one evening, a caddis hatch seemed to be petering out (at least they started ignoring all the caddis flies I threw at them) but the fish were still rising. Sat down along the bank and just watched, hoping to see what was going on and after a few minutes I noticed a few Yellow Sallies crawling on me; tied one on and had an hour of real good fishing until the light was completely off the water (forgot that the regs say fishing ends at sunset).

Lots of good Sally patterns out there, this one's fun to tie and just a bit different; the hackle stem/Uni-stretch body kinda glows (although it doesn't show up well in these pics). Originated by Chris Schrantz, from Ft. Collins, CO.

    hook - Dai Riki 280 #16
    thread - UTC 70 yellow
    underbody - Uni-floss orange
    body - hackle stem yellow
    wing - yearling elk
    head - dubbing yellow
    hackle - ginger

mash barb, attach thread at 60% mark

strip fibers off of saddle hackle feather

tie in hackle stem and wrap back to point above barb

tie in Uni-floss and wrap forward; create tapered body

wrap hackle stem forward in increasingly close turns, touching for last half of body; tie off, trim and brush Sally with Sally

clean and stack a fairly sparse clump of elk and measure for length (hook gap distance past butt end)

tie in, trim butts and smooth with thread wraps

    tie in hackle

    sparsely dub thread

    sparsely dub head

wrap hackle forward, tie off, one more visit from Sally

for low/slow water conditions (optional), trim hackle flat on bottom
