I double checked. I didn't write to Ray's, but to Castle Key in Pt Townsend. This is the link located in the first letter in this thread.

While Ray's has gotten with the program, (and I will thank them on my behalf, and that of the organizations I speak for) Castle Key persists in selling wild steelhead.

Anybody want to paste their letters to Ray's onto this link while we're on a roll, and let them know how Ray's has reacted? Next one I know of is Boston Harbor Seafood in Olympia.

Is Boston Harbor seafood the little store that is at the Marina there? or is it a different company?

Now you have a name to call. I can't speak to Washington's Fish and Game Regulations, but here in Oregon our 'Regs' prohibit the retention of Wild Steelhead (un-clipped) on all but a few rivers (usually only winter fish in the far southern half of the State). But what I found 'effective' was to arm my self with the appropriate pages of the Game Regulations (highlighted in yellow) that clearly state the words "In Possession;' and zero (who gives a sh1t) on how you came into 'ownership' of same.

As I told the store manager, I really wouldn't want to test a sales receipt from Albertson's as a 'defense' in Court. Or for that matter: Try explaining to the Oregon State Police officer (they do the bulk of the river bank game checking) that you bought the fish at "Albertsons???' Heavy Fine, loss of license, etc.

Fellow (Store Manager) took my point .. a couple of days later ... no 'Wild Steelhead' under the meat counter windows nor have I seen any since at any major 'SuperMarket.' Had a friend in Portland (called and told him about the above) and the fish were also gone from his local stores.

Will the fish (probably?) be sold 'elsewhere?' I'd bet on it, but at least we don't have to have our noses rubbed into it. But maybe not? Major chains buy from suppliers, and buy big. If they cut off that bit .. does the supplier get the point?

Food for thought? Maybe, maybe not.

Email (BELOW) Received from Ray's Boat House today (Wed. 11-19-'11) at 1:01 pm in respose to my two earlier emails to them.

    Hello Robert,

Thank you for your additional feedback. We are no longer serving Steelhead. We will continue to work hard to find truly sustainable sources for our products and appreciate your comments at any time. Thank you for your time and passion on this very important issue.

Keep going Guys! "If you build it (the 'case') they will come." The 'end game' will be: 'Is serving this fish worth all the hassle?'

Me thinks not .. but VIGILANCE is Key! There is next year ....

this is awesome. i think the BEST thing any of us can do now, is to go have dinner at Ray's Boat house and say THANK YOU with not only our $$$$$, but also to Peter Birk himself, we ought to make him feel this was a great business decision by the increased patronage, additionally, if you do go, give the waitress a nice big tip with a thank you note too, that way the staff will also get the hint and reinforce this to the general public and patrons that may ask for wild steelhead next time they go.

I just read this thread. Right on guys! Perhaps someone who's a bit of a wordsmith and has experience with Rays could write an editorial thanking Peter for his great decision and giving a responsible business some great publicity beyond WFF. Hopefully that would also encourage other businesses to follow his lead.

    This kicks major behind.
