Just curious what people's thoughts are about restringing an old net with a new brodin ghost bag. What kind of material do you like to use for the stringing? I've read that using #30 Dacron works well... your thoughts? Thanks, Scott
I re-did my Orvis Stretch and Release net with a Brodin Ghost Bag two seasons ago. I went with a Dacron flat thread not round. Flat thread will not dig into the rubber as much as a round thread as the pressure is spread out. If you have trouble finding flat thread shoot me a message and I'd be happy to send you some of mine. JR.
I'm about to do this myself. Brodin's site has this link that may help: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ I read about using 40 to 60lb dacron somewhere. I suspect 30lb works fine though. Add on: I think Brodin supplies string when they send the net. I'll know for sure in a day or so when it arrives.
I strung a new bag on an old net and used nice braided black cord I got from Christensen Networks here in WA. This company does aquaculture netting as well as golf and baseball nets. They sent me 2 different size cords and both were nice. the heavier cord would be prefered for rubber bag if the drilled holes in your frame will accommodate the diameter. I recall the cord had a light wax coating and looks nice on the perimeter of a wood landing net. 1800-459-2147
A useful tool for this job is a wire bobbin threader. Helps zip the thread through the holes in the net.
Re-netting an Old Net... Yes it would cover up a nice wood net's hoop but anyone seen and have any thoughts on the Measure Net rubber replacement bag? Are they both supple and sturdy enough? Is the "weave" a good size?
I have no issues with the zip on measure net replacement bags and have two of them on nice nets. Gentle on fish. The flat dacron or braided nylon are the two products I've used. I like the looks of the black braided nylon the best.
I just made a wood boat net and ordered a Brodin ghost net for it - they sent cord with it that looks like 30-40 lb dacron, worked fine. Michael
I have built quite a few nets and have used both regular rubber nets and the measure nets. My favorite cord for it is nylon duck decoy cord. Threads easily and you can get in many different colors and it lasts for ever. I actually like the measurenets very well in the rubber configuration especially in the larger sizes. It is a finer rubber mesh and is weighs quite a bit less. The zip on is also a nice feature.
I bought a zip on Measure net for a long handle wood net several years ago. Way better than the mesh the net came with originally and the measurement markings are cool. I don't care if it covers up the wood. It's a net.
As a follow up, I just re-strung one of my Brodin nets with a ghost bag and have the following observations/findings: 1) They send enough flat dacron to do the job. I F'd up my first effort and needed more. I found that "Sturgeon Leader" is flat dacron and is available at many "gear fishing" stores (Outdoor Emporium here). It is available in several sizes and the 70lb test is the best match for what Brodin sends. 2) There are instructions on the Brodin site that include clamping the net to the top of the hoop. I would urge you to use masking tape instead and tape the net in several places to find the best match with existing holes in the hoop. In my first attempt I ended up with too much stretch in the top and slack in the bottom, by the handle. (One of the reasons I did it a second time.) I suspect that when they make Ghost Nets, they use a different hole spacing than they do (or did) for mesh nets. You'll want to best fit this to your satisfaction with the taped mockup. 3) Being Swedish, I tried to string the cord "pucker tight". Bad form with a ghost net. They are a very soft material and I cut through one of the loops. Oops. It still looks OK but you can avoid this mistake by aiming at a snug fit, rather than super tight. 4) I found embroidery needles at Bartells and they worked fine. This was a Gallatin model and came out fine, after my second attempt. I may re-string my Cutthroat with the Ghost bag and I hope to "ace" that one. It's not hard, I just make things that way.
