River flashers

Up on Kootenai Lake in BC where the big Kamloops rainbows are (and hundreds of other lakes scattered all over) it's common to fish for big rainbows by trolling big metal or plastic flashers in front of a large fly. The flashers catch their attention, I guess. And the fly triggers the attack.

Has anyone tried a variation on that rig in the rivers? For Steelhead? I might try this on mountain trout. Could be a bit hard to cast. But there's always a way.
