I gave my son a rainshadow blank and components for christmas and he's just getting around to building it. It has been years since I have built a rod, and I need to brush up on a couple of details. I know that you should end up with the length of the rod plus one = number of guides. I know you start with a spacing interval from the tip for the first guide (3", 4" or 5" - I can't remember) and increase the interval 1" per space.

First question - what is the first spacing interval from the tip?

Second question - how far should the first stripper guide be from the end of the grip?

I know, the first should dictate the second, but I want to check myself.

    9' 8 wt.

    Thanks for the help, gents.

Batson has a chart on their site for recomended guide spacing for each rod (look near the top of the home page for "technical info - rod spacing" and follow the links for the right blank). The answers to your questions vary by rod action, so there is no correct answer. That being said, most place the first guide about 4" from the tip.
