It may not be any help, but I fish Sage XP 2wts and absolutely love them. The 2wts have the same feel as all other XP's. Now, if you have an XP to Circa comparison, you have some data.
The Circa's are a slow action rod and the XP is a very fast action and its bit hard to correlate the two. I have fished one of the funny 0 weight series a few years ago and hope the Circa has just a hair more stiffness.
Zen, I have the 3 wt and it's a beautiful small stream rod...
Yes, they have a slow action, but are in no way noodles IMHO.
I can compare the rod to ZXL,s TXL's, LL's and SLT's that I've had in 2 - 4 weight in the past and the Circa is a favourite by a fair margin.
The feel is everything I love about glass, but without the weight & wobble and with the Perception line, the rod will easily make long casts for the rare times they're required on the small waters I fish.
I think Sage have really nailed it with the Circa.
I've got a 3 in a LL and a CT, both are very nice rods to cast and fish. I'm looking for one a tad shorter like the 2 wt Circa. I appreciate your input that the 3 wt Circa is not a noodle rod.
I have the 3wt as well, and it's far from noodly. Soft action, but recovers nicely and fishes very well. Obviously a 2wt is going to be different so you should go cast it and not listen to us.
If'n I was in a big city such as Duvall I might be able to test out a 2 wt at a local enterprise. Moses Lake is a little behind the fly shop curve as we have to make do with picking up reasonably fresh roadkill for materials and reading magazines for reports of newer rods. I believe the latest model stocked in Moses Lake is of Greenheart construction. If Itchy Dog vouches for the 3 wt then the 2 wt must similar.
Bill, with all the great glass rods out there I wouldn't even consider a graphite rod for small streams, just a thought.
So Moses lake has a Greenheart rod ? Cool !!!!
I'm down with glass too. Bill, hop in your car, drive to the wet side, try some rods out at 2 or 3 shops, pick up some perfume (cover for the trip) and I'll have a Xmas beveridge with you.
I was fishing with a guy earlier this year (he can chime in if he wants) and he gave me a 2 wt fiberglass rod reputedly made by the nephew of Ray Bergman. You young whippersnappers might not attach any significance to a relative of Bergman but back in my early fly tying days that was the book I used. I also won a 4 wt modern fiberglass our club had a silent auction on in March. It was made by another board member. I was just looking for the opportunity/reason to have a lightweight Circa made.
Mark - just checked on the availability of the greenheart and it's held for some guy named Walton.
I got to wiggle test a few Circa rods, they do seem really nice and very modern. I wish I had cast the 489, it just seemed like the perfect light 4wt.
In my opinion, they are too fancy for small streams, at least the creeks I fish. My CT 276 is a doozy, however.
