I have missed the last two years sage rat hunting in central Oregon. My traditional date has been father's day weekend, but scheduling, etc. has gotten in the way, and I have found out that mid June has also been too late.

Does anyone know if the little critters are out now over around Christmas Valley? or elsewhere in OR for that matter? I have heard Burns area is still too cold and they aren't out yet over there.

I would like to go this coming weekend, but I need some credible information.

PM or post me a reply if you know anything. Thanks,

O.K. I'm going to ask a dumb ? What is a sage rat?
I have lived in Eastern Oregon and have shot at most everything that has fur.
Most favorite was the Townsend ground squirrels on a ranch that I used to cowboy for in North Power, OR.
We would park in the middle of the squirrel town and wait for them to chill. Shoot a 100 or more per day for a week or so until the hay got to tall.

    I love hunting varmints..

.17 Remington works great. Small enough that both of my kids can shoot it from a bench.

Sage rat=Columbian Ground Squirrel.......a.k.a. gray digger. At least that's what's here in the Columbia Basin.

Get a couple cold ones, the recurve, some carbons (so the woody's and aluminums don't break or boomerang), some rubber blunts, and you're hunting graydiggers in my backyard! So much fun!
