UG made its name in the NW by drift fishermen in rivers due to it abrasion resistence. It hold its strength despite being dragged repeatedly over rocks all day long. It is also not too stiff compared to other durable lines.
it also ties very reliable knots and holds up to chinook and chum teeth
Any advice as to the most reliable store to pick up the UG?
Reliable? Pretty much any store with any fishing stuff (fly fishing or no) has is. I noticed my local Fred Meyer had the big spools at great prices vs the little spools most fly shops have. Either way it's pretty cheap.
Get a big spool and you can re-fill small spools for the rest of your days. Great leader for spey casting large flies in colored water as well.
