It was a few months ago that someone asked about the uses of Scud Back material. I was going through my fly boxes and found a pattern that I forgot about.

As most nymphs have a darker back than belly, I decided to use a darker color Scud Back (Hareline, 1/8") to give the nymph a two-tone look. Plus, the back of a nymph has a shiny look and that is also accomplished with the scud back strand. It worked quite well in a private lake I fished in Central Oregon. I need to tie up some of these guys in different colors. Olive and dark olive was a hit at the lake but I should try some different combinations.

Anyway, here's a use for scud back type material that is not used for scuds.
