tossing sculpin patterns this summer in calm clear water near the beach I saw hundreds of bait fish in schools in the shallows.

yet the cutthroats were still hitting my fly out all those bait fish ? I had 10 hook ups that day. do sea runs pick out and follow bait fish that seem to be panicked and swimming alone much like how wolves attack heards and only go after week singled out pray ?

Is that how they normally eat bait fish by attacking only stray ones or ones that seem to be swiming alone ?

i would imagin its much easier to pick the loners over the balled up ones. your fly would probably moving differently and may make the fish think its an easy mark.
