It's similar to my GBH Soft hackle bugger in the photo gallery. You tie it just like your normal bugger, with a long marabou tail, forward-wrapped with lead. The dubbing is synthetic seal fur, which gives it a pretty buggy look. I have found that the glass bead head and a ring of grizzly soft hackle at the head enhances its fish-attracting properties.

Here is the way I tie it. All seal substitute is not created equal and I think Paul Jorgenson's SEAL-EX is by far the best, unmatched in transluscence when wet.

    Hook: TMC 5212 (6-10)
    Tail: Black Marabou
    Body: SEAL-EX blended (2/3 black, 1/3 red)
    Hackle: Purple Schlappen

The SEAL-EX should be dubbed loosely and picked out after palmering hackle. I prefer a thin unweighted body that resembles a mohair leech rather than the thick wooley bugger profile. The seal bugger is my go-to lake fly and an easy tie. Have fun.

    Hey crockett

Where do you find the SEAL-ex? I haven't been able to find it here. I had some I bought when I was in the UK. But couldn't find it here. In fact, a couple of the fly shops I went to where like "Huh?". Which amazed me. Great stuff, I HIGHLY agree. But, has been as hard for me to find as what's left of legal seal here in the US. LOL. Luckily, I did hit a stash of pre CITIES seal fur, and bought up the old stash out of an estate. But, I use sparingly, and only on some of my tried and true flies. But I'd like to get some more seal-ex. Has been an impossible search on the internet too. I've got thousands of pages, and all aren't what I'm looking for. LOL

    Hey crockett

I don't know about seal-x per se, but the only stuff I have I bought from the man, Denny Rickards himself, at the Sportsmen's Show a few years back. You might try and find a website with his name on Google. My stock is running down as well, so if you find a source, let us know.

That rocky mountain store seems to have some fairly good deals. I ordered about 20 bucks worth of stuff and will let you know how it goes??

    Thanks

I finally found that rocky mountain site last night. Did a very finite search and found a few. But, couldn't find any wholesale (I'm able to buy wholesale from any fishing company that offers a wholesale program). Hmmmm, couldn't get that link above to pan out with the possible wholesale. None of the distributors I know carry sealex. May try some off that sealsub site. See how it compares.

I already know what sealex is like. If it's true seal ex, you'll love it. Stuff works great. Just, never saw it over here. I may contact the company and see if they have discounts if I show them my credentials.

Where to find SEAL-EX locally? Swede's in Woodinville

Rocky Mountain Dubbing Company is the owner and exclusive distributor of SEAL-EX, so you should contact them for wholesale pricing. There is no substitute for this seal substitute.:)

"There is no substitute for this seal substitute"

Try saying that 3 times fast. LOL

I agree. So far, it's best I've found as well. Never realized they were distributed out of the US. Hmmm. I thought it was a UK product. Man, was I wrong. Glad to know they are the wholesaler. Will find out what the going rate is and what the minimum buy is. I'll find out, and if it's good enough, may offer a decent price to all board members if they want to put in an order. We'll see. Have so much to do right now, will see when I can get around to it. Have to have my online time you know. LOL.
