Been tying these babies like mad. Still have to clip the hooks and add stingers. Stocked up on Owners today. This year I refuse to be caught low on flies!

Thanks to Stonefish for the gill and braid body suggestion. Really digging this look

Nothing wrong with that fly and it looks very much like a Stonefish inspired clouser. That will catch ho's fo sho.

Looks great Nick! Try a yellow eye as well.
Less then two months before MA 10 opens up. The silvers always seem to be larger on odd years. The two + two limit also gives us more angling opportunity for catch and release when the silver bite is on.

Looks good Nick. What other colors are you doing? I'm going to try more green in the mix.

Eric, I'm a bit chartreuse/white fan, so I've been tying tons of those. Been experimenting with various material combos. Also been tying a lot of pink/white and pink/chartreuse, in various material combinations.

Don't forget to tie up some realistic sandlance patterns for early season "feeding" resident coho. In 2012 sandlance population seemed to be on the upswing.

Good call, Dime Got any suggestions?

My favorite is an epoxy sandlance pattern or flatwing (3" length). You can find great recipes for epoxy sandlance flies in Les Johnson's book. Fish these in the shallow eel grass beds when you see feeding silvers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've gotta admit, when it comes to the saltwater game I'm not super familiar with sand lances, or the flies to represent them. Always associated them more with cutthroat. Guess I'd better do some research.

Check the archives for Roger Stevens' sand lance patterns. They are killer.

    Nick,
Some good color combos I have lots of success with over the years are...
black or purple over pale pink
Solid pink, chartreuse, orange or white
Use pale pink or light gray stead of white for the belly with any wing color. Have to thank board member Obiwankanobi for turning me onto the pale pink.
If using light gray for the belly, use silver flat diamond braid for the body instead of pearl.

Thanks for the tip, SF. I do not take it lightly. Your suggestion of cerise for chums certainly paid off in spades. I happen to have a lovely light pink bucktail in my drawer so I will definitely add that to my plans.

I've tried all sorts of material combos trying to dial in what I like. I've tried bucktail, craft fur, yak hair, streamer hair, deadly dazzle, various flash stuff.... its fun experimenting.

So far I keep coming back to simple bucktail and some kf.

I've never tied clousers much. A little bit last year but not many. Its been fun figuring them out. I've learned its all about proportion. It's amazing hoe little material is needed for these things. I've tied a small army of them lately as practice and I still overdress one out of every three flies it seems.

Now its time to take what I've learned and attack the other colors.
