Skagit for casting Big Bass Bugs?

Discussion in 'Spey Clave' started by backcast, Apr 6, 2009.

  1. I always get some great advice here and that's why I'm presenting this question.... I going on a backpacking, canoe trip into Canada so packing light and simplifying fly fishing from a canoe quickly is important to me.. Here is the question... I want to use the skagit system for swinging some rivers, drifting flies deep and maybe trolling some big rabbit zonkers with various sizes of sink tips. Now, I want to quickly change to casting big popper bugs or hair flies without changing shooting heads in the canoe...... My thought is to put on a 9' hand tied leader in front of the skagit shooting head, using it somewhat like a bass shooting head.... And yes, this would be an overhead casting effort from the canoe for casting those big bugs. [just for the record I will be using an 8wgt, 11' Switch rod]...If this makes any sense your thoughts, suggestions or experience in this situation would greatly appreciated. Thanks for any input....Mike B
