Ok so on Monday I'm headed back to the most amazing place I've ever fished. I was there in early June and just never got around to posting the photos. This was the clearest water and most stealthy technical fishing I've ever had to do. The fish could see you from 100' away. We were crawling up to holes and scouting them for twenty minutes before creeping closer. I caught some amazing fish. My first Grayling and some big beautiful Marble Trout. Plenty of rainbows mixed in. Enjoy!

    Great pics. Thanks for sharing.

I have a friend who fished Slovenia about 5 years ago. Your photos of the scenery and fish confirm what he's said.

Amazing pics. With water that clear you can see why stalking is required. Do this fish hang in the choppier riffles for cover? By the head shape am I correct in assuming the marble trout is a char species? Thanks for sharing.

I've been waiting for this report! Thanks! I was thinking the same thing as Rob, those marble trout look an awful lot like bull trout.

Yes I believe they are a member of the char family. Ill have another report this weekend. The coolest part of the trip was the guide told me im the first person in 18 years of fishing the rivers that hes seen someone catch a marble on a trout spey. It was pretty sweet. I just picked up a go pro and plan to make a short film this time.

Great report. I just read about fishing in Slovenia. Was this the Soca River?

The bluish water you see is the Soca river. It's all glacier fed and it's predominantly limestone I believe. The streams that have more of the emerald green coloring are all tributaries of the Soca. I'm fishing after melt. I chose to fish Slovenia because I live in Germany which gives me prime access to a fishery not many people will ever get the chance to fish. Big fish beautiful water and amazing scenery. It was amazing.

Awesome stuff. Salmo marmoratus--a brown trout relative, not a char.

Well that makes sense, they introduced brown trout to the river systems and they began crossbreeding with the Marbles. They stopped immediately but were worried for awhile that they would get bred out. You can still find a couple but for the most part the Browns are in only one tributary in the area I fish along with some Brookies.

I had read that too, but they sure look more closely related to Bulls/Dollies than browns. And I know char and browns are capable of interbreeding: tiger trout.

I agree. The head size and body plan all say bull trout. But Europe is Salmo central. I think Arctic char are circumpolar in distribution. Not sure if there are salvelinus in Europe, esp Central Europe.

    Cool experience. Thanks for sharing!
