My son is 16 now. He started to learn to cast a spey rod sparingly when he was 12. It took him a couple of years to grow into his body, and get large enough to fish with the spey rod.

Well for the past 2 years he has been going out with me. No better fishing partner in the world for me. During that time As a Dad you want so badly for a fish to grab his fly, but it just doesn't happen that often. He had began to say he might have a better chance of catching a Unicorn.

Well in our last couple outing though he has been getting some pulls, but no fish on. Well a friend of mine did me a favor he asked me if I wanted to do a 3 day float on the Deschutes and he let me take my son. Needless to say we were all smiles

Right now you are proud as hell, from here on out you will become jealous as he will most likely start kicking your ass is fishing from hear on out. It's just the natural progression of fatherhood.

That's great. We still have to get our boys on the water together. Brad has his spey and is a fishing fool. Just don't talk about the "academy" lol

Awesome.......but when he is living in a van down by the river you have no one to blame but yourself.

    Congratulations Phil, nicely done!

I can relate. My niece was chomping at the bit to catch a salmon so I took her out to catch some pinks and she out fished her father and I.

    Talk about being schooled!

Nothing like the satisfaction of seeing a kid catch their first fish.

When I was 16, and needed money for "equipment" my father told me to get a job. So that's what I did.
