I'm teaching a class on steelheading the OP on thursday at Orvis Bellevue. Apparently, after cleaning them out of all their trout beads, thingamabobbers, and tungsten puddy, they think I know what I'm doing. Joke's on them :) Here's what I plan on covering.

Oh yeah - free beer and pizza. I'm bringing some cigars to coax Leland into smoking and giving up his favorite SRC beaches too. So, bring a stick or two.

    1) Who
    • What type of people fish for steelhead in 30-40 degree weather?
    • Why everyone should pack heat while busting through the backcountry.
    • Trivia question: How many bodies did known serial killer Israel Keyes dump in Crescent Lake?
    • Good guides that support wild fish.
    2) What
    • What kind of fishes are available for pursuit on the OP?
    • Salmon, SRC, and...... Steelhead.
    3) When
    • What are the basic seasons for each species.
    4) Where
    • We're going to mention river names, much to the chagrin of elitist www'ers.
    • Hoh, Sol Duc, Bogaciel - easy, medium, and hard floats to do by yourself.
    • Places to eat, places to tell other fishermen to eat so they are laid up with projectile diarrhea for a while.
    5) How
    • We'll go over a backing to sink tip overview. I'll show you how to save some money and not spend $500 on tips.
    • We'll chat about what flies work best for different situations you're likely to encounter.
    • We'll talk about how to rig up a nymph rig.
    • We'll chat through presentation techniques, and why - if all you're doing is step swinging - you're probably doing it wrong.
    • We'll slice up some runs and talk about where fish are typically hanging out.
    • What data sources are important when considering a trip?
    6) Why
    • Wild Steelhead on the OP
    • Catch and release handling.
    • Why eating wild fish is an unforgivable sin.
    • Ways to get involved in conservation efforts.
    • Organizations every steelheader should support.
"Jesse, why are you putting on a free steelheading class"? "You're an asshole for doing this". Well, I've learned a lot from various members on this site; a lot of great information and a couple of lies. I've also learned a ton from my buddies who've fished with me through some serious skunk spells and also times I dream about! So, I thought it'd be fun to meet some new fishing buddies and also share a bit of the basic knowledge that'll hopefully shorten the learning curve.
I'm of the opinion that the more fishermen who are conservation minded, the more support we'll have to make meaningful changes to the fishery so that future generations can enjoy it.

I wondered what your qualifications were for instructing such a class, but reading the course syllabus tells me you've got the necessary cred. Will you also be revealing the proper way to peg a bead?

That's a subject of great debate Salmo. I'm a three wrap guy, but the toothpick crowd has been persistent in advocating the errors of my ways. I will be dispelling the attraction of the trout bead silicon pegs, which are blatantly worthless and should not have survived even an afternoon of product testing.

Looks like I'd better be there . . . if only for the free pizza and beer

I think the word teaching might be a stretch:). That being said, BS'ing at a flyshop with free pizza and beer, and the off chance of talking to someone that knows what they are doing is a tempting offer. Sounds like it should be a fun event.

I wish I could be there as well, but I'm also in the eastside. I wish Orvis Bellevue would film it and put it on their Youtube channel.

That'd be great. PM sent for my address so you could also deliver some of the free beer/pizza to my apartment mid-class.
