    It's not true at all that the Lake Trout populations were exptemely depressed when the steelhead were planted in the great lakes tributaries. Actually they were thriving. The steelhead were planted into Lake Superior as early as 1912 from WA stocks. The lake trout comercial fishery was never in jeopardy until the advent of the sea lamprey explosion that started in the later part of the sixties. These eels decimated the lake trout population but weren't as hard on the steelhead. So they didn't take as hard a hit. Now the lamphrey seem to be under control as far as I know, and the lake trout have been on the rebound since the seventies.
