these patterns look the same to me. what is the difference and do they represent stones or just used as attractors?

Well I must be the only one awake at this time of the morning. If you put them side by each about the only way to tell them apart is that the hackle on a Sofa Pillow is longer and more of it than a Stimulator. Plus you don't have the different colored heads on a Sofa Pillow.

This is just the opinion of an old man and they don't mean much :(

What you're comparing it to Mike is called an Improved Sofa Pillow. The original recipe was tied using two slips of red duck for a tail, a body of red yarn or I somtimes used a red floss. The wing is tied from red fox or squirrel, and the hackle is the brown. The hackle is not wound through the body on the orignal pattern, just infront of the wing.

I believe they, the orignal, were used to imitate salmonfly adults.

I just looked a picture of the 2, your right it is the improved sofa pillow that i was looking at, the only differance that i see is that the stimulator has a different colr head then the body and some of the sofa's have legs, but i you can do that to a stimulator to.
