Max McYoung never cast a fly in his life, he had no idea why anyone would even bother, but if you value the Skagit you owe this gear chucker a prayer or two. A more cantankerous and obnoxious old cuss you could not hope to meet. A more sincere and effective advocate for the river we all treasure has yet to be born. It was not Max alone who helped save the Skagit in the 1980's when it most needed saving but it was his voice that most clearly defined the threat and mobilized action. This week Max went on to that place where every river runs forever free but his contribution to his beloved Skagit will be remembered.

I remember that old codger. He did get the USFS to move on its Wild and Scenic River responsibilities, but in truth, the FS did little to improve water quality conditions or anything else on the Skagit River.
