    M&Y 6th Annual Spey Day

Here it is again, the day you don’t want to miss, it’s also a day that we don’t want to miss, as this has become our customer appreciation day and it’s grown into a great fly fishing get-together in the lower mainland. Many non-spey casters and curious fly fishers come out to enjoy the camaraderie and witness some awe inspiring casting.

    Date – Saturday April 9th, 2011

    Time: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Location: Peg Leg Bar, Fraser River, Chilliwack. (How to get there instructions are posted on our website at www.myflyshop.com )

Cost – Free, just lot’s of smiles.

This is the perfect day to watch some world class demos, chat with the product manufacturers, receive great casting pointers from the so many rock stars hangin around and willing to pass on their expertise, and to just hang out with your pals. This event is also that once a year opportunity where you can pretty much try out any big name rod with just about any big name line – It’s also a great opportunity to try bring along your existing rods and experiment with some new lines and new casting techniques - you’d be surprised just how easy many of these new lines cast.

Many of the demos will discuss and utilize single hand rods as well, so even if you don’t see a spey rod in your future, there will be plenty to learn for all! Ryan will be demonstrating a switch rod – a rod that is switched between spey and single hand casting – truly a deadly weapon. It’s amazing how the principals and fundamentals are so similar when comparing and understanding single hand and double hand casting. This event is designed for everyone from the curious who are thinking of taking up spey casting to the rock stars who want to try out the latest in spey tackle. Bring along your waders and try out anything you fancy.

This year, there will once again be an awesome raffle, but with a different twist as noted below. We will once again be serving complimentary burgers, dogs, sody pops and hot beverages for lunch – and you all get to watch Dave and Ryan flip burgers for a few hours!!

This year’s signature guest will be Simon Gawesworth, a treat that is long overdue and we feel grateful and privileged to have our event graced by Simon’s presence. A special thanks to Simon and his sponsoring company Farbank Enterprises, the parent company for Sage, Rio and Reddington. Special thanks as well to Peter Morrison, The Farbank BC Rep who pulled all the strings and helped bring up Simon for this event.

Also coming from the US will be Nextcast Pro staff member Brian Styskal where Brian and his counterpart, Greg Bencivenga, will be conducting an awesome demo – these guys are also a must see as they are world class casters!

And not to be outdone, Whitney Gould will also be part of the US invasion where she and our beloved Adrienne will also conduct a clever Demo.

And of Course, there will also be the usual contingency of M&Y talent to round off the demonstrations. A brief itinerary is as follows – see our website for a more detailed description:

9:45 AM: Dave O’Brien – Introduction and Outline

10:00 AM: Aaron Goodis – The Power of the Underhand

11:00 AM: Simon Gawesworth – Tips and Faults

12:00 PM: Ryan Heitz – Switch Casting

    12:30 PM: Complimentary BBQ

1:30 PM: Brian Styskal & Greg Bencivenga – Short Heads, Mid Heads and Long Heads

2:45 PM: Adrienne Comeau & Whitney Gould – Spey casting: A Fishing Prospective

3:45 PM: Tim Arsenault – Locks & Blocks

4:15 PM: Wrap Up and Steelhead Society Raffle

This is a non-partisan event, and everyone is welcome to attend. People from other shops, industry people, come out and enjoy the festivities.

There will be product representation from the likes of Scott, Sage, Loomis, Winston, Burkeheimer, Nextcast, Echo, Guideline, Rio, Airflo and Scientific Anglers, plus others who want to show their wares.

This year, we have so many great prizes that we decided to change the format of our raffle. Many of our generous sponsors and raffle prize donators had suggested that we charge for raffle tickets and donate all the proceeds to a good cause and we thought that this was a great idea. Correspondingly – we have chosen the BC Steelhead Society as this year’s choice for a good cause – so to this end we have revised the raffle draw as follows:

    M&Y Spey Day Raffle Tickets

Cost $5.00 each – All proceeds go to the BC Steelhead Society.

Rules: You can buy as many tickets as you like – but you can only win one of the major prizes. So, if you have already won a major prize and should your name be drawn a 2nd or 3rd time you will still receive a 2nd or 3rd cool prize, but just not another major prize as listed below.

    Major Prizes

    Hatch reel

    Loomis Versa Spey rod

    Islander Fly Reel

    Abel #2 pliers

    Echo Solo Rod

½ days Guided Instruction with Francois Blanchet

A ride in an Airplane?? Remember Last year!

Plus a few other major prizes to be announced…..

There will be all kinds of T-shirts, fly lines and other Knick Knacks as prizes as well. I hope that everyone buys multiple tickets to help raise money for a good cause and to help with the odds for some of these incredible prizes.

Also – unlike past year’s raffles, you don’t have to be present at the end of the day to be eligible to win any of the raffle prizes – just leave your contact info on your raffle ticket stub and should your ticket be drawn, we will contact you and hold your loot for you at either of our locations for pick-up.

There you have – I hope to see all of you at the Spey Day on April 9th.
