I've been trying to get this up for a couple of weeks now... This is a video of my Dad skating a dry fly last month. I spent some trying to get some footage of skating dry flies and give my Dad a chance to try and land some fish. He got his first fly-caught steelhead on the same fly about 20 minutes before this was taken.

I was fishing up on the east fork of the Foss one summer day a few years ago. Was catching cutts to 14" and then it happened, I got a steelhead on a dry. A size 14 Black Humpy. It was a legal sized fish, so I didn't feel so bad about keeping it. The adipose fin had a healed scar. So I bonked it and took it home to eat.

When I went to clean it, it didn't have any eggs or a milt sac in it. So I wasn't to sure of the sex of the fish. But it was plump.

Fantastic. Tried it, but didn't have that kind of success this year. Hard to beat watching the take. Might watch it a few more times. :beer2:

Give it a try, you might be surprised at how effective it is. For a couple of weeks in October I was having better success skating dries than I was swinging subsurface. I was bringing up 5-10 fish a morning doing this, although most of them were refusals or didn't hook up clean. It is also REALLY tough to remember to drop a loop when they take before setting the hook. You end up yanking it out of their mouth or not getting a good hookset. This is what happened to my Dad in the video. If you watch, he set the hook the minute he saw the fish which is why he got pissed at himself. I had given him the lecture about 5 times by that point, but it is SO hard when you see them come up like that.

My Dad really had trouble getting the nymphing technique down, although after 2 days of nagging he finally was able to do a decent job of it. Still, if you ask him, he thinks that skating dries is the ONLY way you can really catch a steelhead...

Probably the best one is the one I got right underneath one of the bridges. After a marginal morning of fishing I asked my fishing partners if they wanted to see one taken on the dry fly. I sent them up on the bridge above where I knew one typically held and they got to see him move to the fly and come up and take it. Really wish I had given one of them my camera...
