Saw this on Spey Pages and it had some interesting responses. Try it here? I'll start: Retired Ironworker at 43, Construction Manager and Inspector/Analyst for 18 years. Retired March 2012.
Boeing Co. Many jobs in 38 years. Last 10 or so a Quality Assurance inspector and QA lead. Retired April 30 1999 at the age of 64. I haven't even thought of working again. Retired and loving it.
Retired Army Medic of 21 years, 18 as a nationally registered Paramedic. After that I worked for 10 years in clinic research before getting hit with the laid off hammer like so many others, for the past year I have been working with returning veterans helping them cope with PTSD........by far the most rewarding job I have ever held.
OMJ, I've had some inquiries as to doing some part-time and/or consulting, and for now, I'm having too much fun to even consider it. In my world of construction, it's so depressed I was offered a contract job of 24 months that paid less than we were paying consultants 10 years ago. When I raised my eyebrows at the offer, the response was "there's a lot of overtime". That's the last thing I want right now.
I was a commercial fisherman gillneting in S.E alaska in the summers and crabbing & trawling during the winters on the Berring Sea until I was 30 from then on I have been a maintenace mechanic at boeing going on 23 years
Post-doctoral research associate at Univeristy of Washington in the Schoolof Aquatic and Fishery Sciences. I use molecular tools to study the ecological significance of invasive American shad in the Pacific Northwest.
Pipefitter to Management . . . from Montana to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard . . . back to Montana . . . then to Hanford, where I'm saving the world from nuclear waste for another year or so. Oh yeah, and deputy sheriff, bar owner/operator/bouncer, big-game guide, & Latin scholar (thought I was going to be a priest . . . then "things" changed . . . ).
I have had to many jobs doing to many things to list them all. Commercial fisherman, construction working, bartender (both sides) to name a few, currently an IT Manager for a large grow operation(we are hoping to go legal in a few years).

Almost 35 years at UC Davis; Lecturer in Mediecal History, Senior Adviser for Undergraduate Admissions, and for five years in addition to teaching and reviewing student portfolios, head coach for the UC Davis Nordic Ski Team 1985-1990, with 5 league championships, one kid to U.S. Development team, and one who became the National Champion in triathlon for his age group. I had some talented athletes on the team! I also used to guide for trout in the summers for awhile, in addition to other dabblings.
Wow! What a great bunch of talent here. One reason I started this. In addition to the obvious, like Leland (Orvis manager and afficionado of fine scotch and cigars), I knew there are some interesting people out there. Alex, My Da was a Classics (Greek & Latin) major at Cambridge, but he was also very interested in the Arthurian tales; Renault, etc. Still love that stuff.
Commercial HVAC/R Service Tech, loving every minute of it. Work for a manufacturer now where the systems they have now challenge me to improve upon them for efficiency and manufacturing needs, and upgrading the DDC controls. I plan to go back to school and become a Mech. Eng. (Since I tend to unofficially operate in that capacity anyways)
Nine years as production chemist and 23 as environmental scientist for Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY. Retired in 2006 at 55, moved to Orlando, FL and became a contract environmental auditor. Recession in 2008 made me look for a real job again and found one with Energy Northwest in Tri-Cities.
