Got into a weird situation a couple weeks ago where an oar suddenly came loose from the internal carbon housing. I sure wish I had some super glue, but a buddy's first aid tape roll did the trick. Just curious what you pack in your emergency bag for inflatable trips? What's the best quick patch on the river? Most of the patches I'm seeing take 24 hours to set?
Zip ties, straps, frame pins, repair kit, pump, knife, rope, duct/electrical tape screw driver, pliers/multi-tool and probably some other things that I can't think of now.
Duct tape. And Tear Aid. Scotch. That Gorilla tape sounds like a good idea too. I might throw some zip ties in too.
Good idea to carry an extra oarlock too. Once I hit a rock so hard with my oar that it snapped (or bent) the pin and the brass oarlock shot out of the frame and fell into the water as I was still holding the oar. That turned into a nice cluster. I was able to wedge the oar into a gap in the frame and continue to row effectively enough to get my ass out of danger. I've carried a spare lock and pins ever since.
I didnt see anybody mention this, so I thought I would throw it out there. could save your life?? A dry change of close, when floating rivers.
I live in California, so I just carry duct tape and a cellphone with my attorneys number on speed dial because it wouldn't be my fault;-)
Ya I was with him on a cold Feb. day on the Sandy when he took a swim. We were still 3 to 4 hours away from the takeout. He had brought along a complete change of dry clothing for under his waders. From that day on when I float I do the same.
My Sig. Seriously, I'm not floating something that would require anything like a "wilderness" rescue, so I've got patch stuff, spare oarlock, first aid, and that's about it. Get me out in the forest though, and that's a completely different story. There, I've got my hunting knife, sharpener, rain shell, firestarting materials, emergency food, water, small 1st aid stuff, whistle, 550 cord, multi-tool, and a hunter's axe. There's nothing I can't make with that stuff.
The bag is a 1 gal. ziplock. : whistle, multi tool, lighter, w/p matches, w/p band aids, I.D., pen, mirror, garbage bag, athletic tape, hand sanitizer. latex gloves, t.p. The 2 1/2 gal. bucket for the pontoon boat has the pump, patch kit, water, knife, fish club, regs book, zip ties, tie down, rope, life vest( wrapped around bucket in cooler) flash light, fish towel and my ziplock bag on top. I also carry a dry bag on all floats, clothes, raingear, towel, water.
Here's a list that I have been working on depending on how remote the area. I also let someone know my float plans. Extra oar blades, oar, pins, and locks. Patch kit and pump, if in the 'toon. Two different multi-tools. Extra anchor rope, and another good piece of rope. Duct tape. Super Glue. Toilet paper. Cable saw. Flashlight. Med kit full of stuff. Pliers. Firestarter. Life jackets and whistles for all passengers extra rope water and food for the day matches in water proof sack flashlights tarp sterno mirror 550 cord zip ties knife
