Wild Steelhead on the menu at Kalaloch Lodge.

For all of you who care about the future of wild steelhead, please take the time to contact Kalaloch Lodge or the Olympic National Park and give them an ear full. I just returned from a trip to the coast and the fishing this season is not off to a great start. As I was leaving town, I stopped in to eat at Kalaloch Lodge where I have stayed for years. As I walk in the front door I see the sign with tonight's specials. As you can see from the picture they are not aware of the current state of steelhead nor are they doing their part to help the future for these magnificent Hoh River fish. I tried to talk to the staff and they looked at me like I was from another planet. They assured me the fish was wild. I urge you all to either call, email or write a letter to the staff at Kalaloch or Olympic National Park. Unless we convince the tribes that we don't want to eat their steelhead, they will continue selling them for next to nothing a pound. It is just a bad deal.

I'm sorry, But I read that menu and it doesn't say a thing about WILD Steelhead. It just says Steelhead. There is nothing wrong about eating or selling hatchery fish.

I forgot to state that chef and staff assured me they were wild fish. Last time I checked the Hoh tribes nets were not filing up with hatchery fish in February. The State and Tribes do supplement the Hoh with some plants but most are early returning in November and December. This time of year they are as wild as it gets

I sent a comment expressing concern to the Park via their email contact.

Not to mention that the hoh did not get any returning hatchery fish this year except for stays due to the ihn virus a few years ago.

There is plenty wrong with buying hatchery steelhead. The nets used to catch them kill wild fish too.

If that is the case why are all the sportsfishers fishing on the Hoh ? I thought we weren't suppose to mess with the natives in hopes of rebuilding the runs!!!

Not the case on the Hoh. Killing fish is allowed by tribal and non-tribal. Legality and what's best being 2 different things.

I'm calling. Thats crap. Aside from a million other reasons Kalaloch is associated with Olympic national park, which does not allow the retention of wild steelhead because they feel stocks are too low. If you call it will make a differnce, call ONP also.

It's a sad situation but as I have said many times before, if we don't do something about the Boldt decision, we are screwed. The natives will do as they please and thumb their noses at the rest for something that happened more than 200 years ago. I don't know any congressmen or senators but maybe someday someone who really cares will do something about the process of overturning that decision. I'll be in the ground by then but maybe my grandchildren will see that day.

Treaties are about the toughest thing to overturn. Unless Washington secedes from the USA, I don't think there's a damn thing we can do.

I know. But I remember when the damn decision was made. There was a very cool bumper sticker then, "Save our fish. Can Judge Boldt." It's the only bumper sticker I have ever put on one of my vehicles. Just sayin'...

You can't stop the Indians from netting fish. If they can't sell them they will just rot away. I know it's no good to try to stop them from selling wild fish. It is what they do to survive. And it's their way of life.

You can all thank the Courts for giving the Indians what they wanted.
Beating it to death here stops some but not all.

If the treaty was signed 200 years ago. Then make them fish the way they did back then. They didn't have Gill Nets back then. They used weirs and spears.

Also suggest posting on their Facebook page. Lostriver, could post your photo on their page and include your first hand conversation with the chef about it being wild? That would spark the topic. If not, I can post for you if that's okay.
