I used to tie up woven flies. But I quit tying altogether 6 years ago due to the shakes. This winter I thought I would try to tie again. I do like these woven flies as I did about 100 Blood Worms for Aaron out at River Run anglers about 10 years or so ago. I know they work good as I tried my last one last year on BSC. The fly no sooner hit the water and it was taken by a big fish.
Well I did my first one today. I see that I need some better lighting and I need to practice more. The shakes didn't bother me like they used to. Either my shakes are going away or I'm just laid back better. If I get a few tied up I will post a picture of them. Not going to try to show how they are tied. That would drive me nuts.
No, I learned how to do these from Aaron over at River Run Anglers. I do these by hand. I don't use any tools of any kind unless it's a whip finisher and a pair of scissors and of course a vise. I'm going to get me a light with a magnifier on it. The light helps and the magnifier helps make it bigger so I can see my mistakes. While your weaving the flies sometimes you miss a beat.
Some of George's flies are out of my reach for purchasing. My flyfishing buddy from Wyoming got one of the last he tied before he past away came with tying instructions I tried to match it turn out one shitty fly
Get some horse tail or mane hair from one of the Dillon neighbors. That works great for the backs on Potts patterns. I use rod-winding thread (doubled) for the belly & either horse hair or bear hair for the hair hackle (leave the shank bare near the eye, tie it in backwards & spin it around, then double the ends back over the body & tie off.
The only woven flies I ever had any interest in were the Olympic Stonefly Series Steelhead flies tied by Jim Garrett. These flies can be seen in Trey Combs' book "Steelhead Fly Fishing".
We lost Jim (I can't recall when) and I always regretted not meeting him and telling him much I liked his flies.
I learned how to tie his woven stoneflies from a Port Angeles friend but I never quite mastered the technique. I certainly wouldn't want to post a photo of any I tied.
