Hi Bert! I'm so excited to go to the Sandy River Spey Clave in May. Are you going to be heading down for it?

Great, Lisa. I'm glad you cast the 7/8 TFO. We need to let you cast some others as well, including heavier ones, but we also need to talk about what kind if fishing you plan to do with the first rod. We'll get you there, soon. See you at a clinic.

I loved seeing your parents, but Justin was quite demanding since we had been away for a month so I did not visit as much as I would have liked. Next time!

Hey Bert! Hope you and everyone had a great Thanksgiving! My parents said they really enjoyed spending it with you guys. :)

I wanted to let you know, I got a chance to cast Andrew's new TFO 7/8 wt. Deer Creek Kinney spey rod. I really like it a lot. I got the double spey down pretty well. I LOVE this rod. I'm looking forward to casting a heavier one too- to compare- but I'm thinking this is the rod I will be looking into. Hopefully we can get to a clinic early December sometime! Take care.

Most anytime after Thanksgiving. We can make some definate plans over TG dinner. I propose that you join me at M Kinney's clinic the Sunday after Thanksgiving. We will get you there. If you have to get out before I get back, head for the Snoqualmie from Fall City up to the Falls or the Skykomish from Lewis Street up.

Hey Bert! When do you think we will be able to hit some rivers around here? I really want to fish the peninsula. I also am desperate to start spey casting. I just know that I would be much happier if I could steelhead with a spey rod, and not have to worry so much about tree branches and spend less energy per cast. I have been watching a lot of videos and trying to learn, but it's hard to not be out there actually getting the hands on practice. Where do you think is the best place to fish right now? I am so anxious to spey cast for fish I can hardly stand it!

Yes I saw that... that is so tragic. Thank you for sending me that. I definitely think wading smarts are crucial. Andrew is extremely cautious when guiding me, so we haven't been in strong currents, and he won't allow me to wade in areas he knows are hard. I am the ambitious one, though, so I will be more careful from now on. My family and I are looking forward to Thanksgiving with the Kinghorns! :)

I floated the Sky last week with a 74 year-old friend. We got lots of pinks, chased coho and cutthroat and did not touch a one. It was great to get him out regardless. He is an amazing guy and in great shape, but is afraid to fish these days because of the wading. Just getting him on the river was a monumental feat. I had fun testing myself with a singlehanded rod all day and was pleased that my casting was good (for me) even at the end of the day. If the cutthroat had been there, I would have gotten them the way I was casting. Look forward to visiting on Thanksgiving! ~bert

Hi, Lisa. Sorry your most recent Idaho trip was not so successful as the first, but the sooner you learn that steelheading can have its dry spells, the better. Catching fish is fun, but you will soon learn that doing well while chasing them, even if you don't have a touch can be better. Glad to hear you got those studds. You should not need them for winter fishing (where I fish) but they can't hurt. Just be careful on the dry rocks.

Don't sweat your lack of a rod. I can take care of that.

Hi Bert! Unfortunately, I got to see how steelheading really is on my last trip to Idaho. haha. Andrew and I fished the Salmon, Snake and a run at the Ronde and didn't get anything other than a few hits the first day. I still love it though, so I guess it didn't damper my mood too much! :) I look forward to fishing with you next month or after. I unfortunately do not have a rod that I can use for steelheading though. Andrew left me with his 5 wt to fish with, but his 8 wt. I was using for steelheading, is in Idaho with him of course. He put studs on my boots for me, and that helps my wading a lot. How was the rest of your trip in Idaho? Have you done any fishing around here lately? I fished on Vashon Island this morning for SRCs and Silvers- that was the intent anyway- and I ended up hooking one small pink salmon. haha. I was happy with that. Anyway, hope everything is going well! (It sounds like I may be seeing you for Thanksgiving)

I should have added in my last that we did not hook any steelhead on my last trip to the Cowlitz. There were cutthroat everywhere, but we were way overgunned for them with our steelhead gear. I did hook one king salmon of about 20 lbs and happily I managed to slackline it off after about 3 minutes. The week before I got one steelhead of about 12 lbs.

Sounds great! I start back at UW at the end of this month, so the weekends will be my free time. I look forward to fishing with you sometime!

I will definitely tell Andrew about your friend Poppy, and we will have to stop in when I'm there! I can't wait to be immersed in the beauty of Idaho's rivers in a few weeks. Even if I don't catch anything, I'll just look around me and feel satisfied. Have a great trip! :)

p.s. It was great meeting Susie as well. Now I have met Jillian's entire immediate family!

Hi Bert! I was at your house with Jillian yesterday, and I heard you went fishing at the Cowlitz. How was it? I am going to Idaho next month to visit Andrew (he moved out near Lewiston for work- probably just through the fall), and he is going to take me out to fish for steelhead on the Grande Ronde, Snake and Clearwater. I plan to cast a thousand times, and if I catch anything, I will be thankful. :) I would really like to fish with you sometime. I haven't been out on any rivers since July, so if you make any trips in the future that would allow room for some company, I would honored to join you!
