I think our stack of PM replies has gotten too thick, electronically, to add to. Sink tips and poly leaders are the same thing, for practical purposes. The different lengths, weights, and densities make a considerable difference, of course.

You probably know as much as I do about fishing nymphs from floating lines with longer, usually lead-weighted leaders. Both are good ways to fish a fly near the bottom. Both have limitations, due to bouyancy factors. To get deeper, use some combination of these parameters: the fastest-sinking tips your rod can comfortably handle; weighted flies (lead wire underbody, barbell eyes, cone heads, heavy-wire hooks); longer sinking time, achieved by casting straight out or even quartering upstream; step downstream just after you've cast out, rather than between casts - it gives the fly a bit more time and distance to sink while swinging around. Using all these in combination might get you to the bottom of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon!
