Headed out to Martha (Eastside)on Sunday with my 4 year old and a close friend who recently was blessed with a beautiful baby girl. We chose Martha because I had just got my Watermaster Kodiak boat bottom in from BSI. So I wasn't into a hike into any of the more quality basin fisheries.
I've had the Kodiak for five years now and have absolutely loved it, but the time had come for the gromlette to graduate to vessel oriented stillwater fishing. I got it in on Saturday and dialed in how I thought I wanted the cooler/boat bag/seating how I wanted it; or so I thought.
We rolled out of town at the crack of 10:30ish, and got to Martha around 11:45. It took just a few minutes to get rigged and we were off and into a small chronie hatch. There was a 5-7mph breeze that would come and go, which had a profound effect on the bite. The fishing was hot and cold but we managed to get into 7-8 nice fish to start the day from 14-18". The kid had a freaking hoot, and reeled in most of my hooked fish. She even hooked one (and lost it) on her own while I was hooked up....calling it our first double. I did hook one that was more than she could handle, it hit 20 in the measure net. All in all I think we landed around 15 between the two of us in just a few hours.
The kid did excellent in the boat, although she started to get really restless when the fishing slowed, so we took some laps around trolling, which doubled for exploring bays for proper bobber conditions.
The boat bottom ended up being even better than I expected. It was super sturdy, provided a bunch of extra storage, and was a perfect spot for a kiddo of her stature. I was able to stand on the seat and cast while she played in the bottom, which worked out great. Super stoked on it, but now I see the advantages of a PRAM!
