Yea, my wife called me at work yesterday from a thrift shop in Seattle. "Have you heard of Abel fly reels?" I say, yea but they are real expensive.

She then texts me pictures of an Abel pt.5 with SA 6wt line. As thrift shop prices go it was expensive, at $80, but she bought it for me. I got my first Abel reel. Sweet!

Paired it tonight on a rod Evan Burk built and while it is small at 3" diameter, it balances this 6wt well and the cork drag is very smooth.

Now I have an Abel reel. Its old and discontinued, but quality USA fly reels from a thrift shop are hard to find!

Abel makes great reels. I like the TR series. My only complaint is I wish they would go to a different finish (like the Lamson hard alox or speyco) because all their reels after some use will show it.

Great score on an excellent reel. I've never even heard of a reel of that quality found in a thrift shop before. My wife has a doctorate in thrift shop shopping and often calls me when she spots rods and reels but so far they haven't panned out. This reel should last you the rest of your fishing life.

Now of course I have re-listened to that song 100 times. I found a great parody for the dads out there.

I'm thinking you owe the wife a nice dinner out for that one, perhaps Ruth's Chris... still a bargain, even at $160 :D
