That looks pretty sweet. Hopefully they include some stuff on the conservation issues around steelhead, it would be an injustice to the fish not to inform viewers about the problems facing steelhead throughout their range.

Conservation deffinately has it's place, I'm just not sure this video is it. AEG videos are straight fish porn, I'd like to see them keep it that way. Let the other video making fly fishing whores who sell gear, lodges and guides do the pushing. I would also think the fly fishing demographic purchasing these videos are already aware of steelhead conservation, more so than most anyways.

    david,

on the contrary I would argue that many anglers who pursue steelhead are unaware of the conservation issues surrounding their fishery. Ignorance is not bliss when these fish are in decline through much of their native range and it is up to every one from managers to fish porn purveyors to come together for a solution. I imagine the AEG folks agree. I don't mind pure fishing action (not that it interests me that much) when it comes to fishing for non-native browns an rainbows in New Zealand, and Argentina however steelhead are currently listed in over half of the ESUs (evolutionarily significant units) in the lower 48. if we choose to pursue or promote steelhead fishing we cannot make that choice without at the same time conveying the urgency of protecting and restoring wild runs. Frankly without management that promotes their continued existence and recovery we wont be able to chase steelhead in Washington state in 30 years.

You very well could be correct regarding ignorance amonst those persuing steelhead. Perhaps being on this board, with so many knowledgable individuals, has skewed my impression of the average steelheader. I don't disagree with you about the importance and need for conservation, not one bit! But...I just don't want to see AEG become one big advertisement like so many other videos, whether it be for products or politics.

There's 18zillion non-profits working on steelhead and the fish are still fuxored. Too much talk, not enough action, typical WA style.

Don't put failed policy on AEGs shoulders. Let us enjoy the video.

ah, it might be time to relax and put things into perspective!

No one is trying to beat anyone else over the head with conservation, rather some are just working pretty damn hard to save fish stocks/resources. It may seem too much as we're a fairly informed group on this page, but take a gander at some gear sites/rivers and you'll probably be able to see Wills' p.o.v. a bit better. I'm not bashing gear guys either, I fish gear in certain situations as well.

Honestly I'll take a good dose of someone thats a 'bit too much' in the conservation direction for a damn change of pace after witnessing what I've seen on the rivers lately. Treble hooks, snagging, native fish retention, when people are dead set on putting supper on the table the rules seem to go out the window.

..on that note it is obvious on all AEG vids that they release all fish caught :hmmm:

I'm with ya, I don't keep anything except an occasional salmon (hatchery of course) and I am immensely grateful for the guys that devote their time to conservation. But sometimes I just want to watch the football game without my wife talking about how the cheerleaders outfits are a little too tight.

BTW after reading as much as possible about how to help wild steelhead I think I am going to start taking all the hatchery fish I catch. Any thoughts?
