Well you asked the right guy. Just fished the Pit River, but it's at least a 4 hour drive from Sacramento. Oh, contact www.americanflyfishing.com. The American and Yuba Rivers are very close to Sacramento, and Skwala's are hatching! Those are the only two rivers I can think of off the top of my head.

Nothing really in LA that's open. Las Vegas area doesn't have any trout fishing opportunities. If you're still heading to San Francisco still try the Lower American River, steelhead fishing is pretty good on it right now. If you go there try small, dark nymphs, such as a Black AP nymph.

2X the Yuba, Skwalas on top, now. Can you afford a Guide? Sac in Redding should be good. Owens on the East side if you're driving to/from Vegas.

When you are in Modesto, hit up the Tuolomne River in La Grange. It is about an hour away and has some big rainbows in it. Not sure if the river is open yet though so check the regs. You can also look at the Stanislaus and Merced.

Between LA and SF is the Ventana Wilderness. Nice country. Trout in the rivers.

SF has some ponds and lakes at Henry Coe State Park with fish. Like Ventana this is a walk-in-show. Some might have trout. Lots of places to fish in the East Bay Regional Park district for planted trout.

Sacramento.....Sacramento River around Red Bluff and Redding. Not that far a drive from Sacramento. Check out the BLM north of Sacramento: http://usbackroads.blogspot.com/2012/03/sacramento-river-bend-area-bureau-of.html

Las Vegas.......Lake Mead had stripers in it. That will make you forget trout. Lake Mohave had huge trout just below Hoover Dam, but I think they have all been caught. If you have the time in Las Vegas, go to southern Utah.

There are better things to do in California than fish for trout. Go to Yosemite Valley in the spring and see the waterfalls. Go to Hetch Hetchy and marvel at what the city of San Francisco has destroyed inside a National Park. Go see the Giant Sequoia's in Yosemite or Sequoia/Kings Canyon. Drive Highway One along the Big Sur coast.
