What brand of cork do you buy? Or perhaps the real question would be, in your opinion where can a rodbuilder buy the best cork? I've been looking for the absolute best cork money can reasonably purchase - grips only, rings excluded. I'm aware of the grading systems, but they can be very subjective from one seller to the next. PM me if need be.
Anglers Workshop in Woodland sells the best you can buy but it is expensive. An advantage of buying it at the store (as opposed to mail order) is you can pick the piece you want. A disadvantage is you will probably end up buying a lot of other stuff too
I recently received a batch of raw cork from corsica. This cork was just flawless. The downside is that you need to cut and slice your own rings but the quality is well worth the time and effort. In my opinion it is much, much better than the /portuguese/ cork that is available on the market right now
Don, I'll have to agree with your recommendation. For the past month I have been looking everywhere for cork and so far Angler's Workshop has had the best quality grips - even better than the $30 full wells I bought from Struble two months ago (ouch). And like you said, I got to pick out the one I wanted.
