Great news. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission voted to ban use of the break away jig in Boca Grande Pass starting November 1st. I've witnessed how damaging this tournament jig fishing technique is to the tarpon that congregate into this sanctuary. Hopefully they tightly restrict all tarpon fishing in Boca Grande Pass (a small area) to protect these amazing fish.

The break away jig has been banned for years. Anglers responded by fishing non break away jigs. The change to banned tackle is now a jig with a circle hook above it which leaves live bait as the fishing method of choice. I think it's a very slippery slope to say banning artificial tackle in favor of live bait is great news. If the fish are over exploited with artificial lures it's time to close the area to all fishing IMHO.
