That’s right, I am looking to purchase a vehicle for my daughter. A third vehicle that will likely tap any and all money from her Dad's fishing funds. If the vehicle comes with a fly rod, all the better! :D
When asked what type of car she wants to drive, her answer was… "I don’t know, a Happy Car”. As her father, I took that to mean a reliable, safe vehicle between $3,000 – 5,000.
I am not in a rush to buy, sometime between now and summer, but please send me a note if you know of a vehicle that fits this description that will be for sale in the near future.
    Thank you!

Been there......good luck my friend. Wait until you find the perfect car, well maintained, low miles, mint condition and she says yuck that looks like a boy's car.....it's ugly.....ha!

You are really thinking you'll find a good used car on a fly fishing board? Most likely thrashed and tons of wash board back road miles. You should register on the knitting or macramé forums instead. Just sayin... ;)

    Its possible to find.
If my mother who is 88 and still driving her 97 Honda Accord with 60,000 miles becomes unable to drive, I will let you know. As of right now she is still putting around to the Dr and grocery store. Kinda scary tho.

Actually, looking for such a car on this site just might be brilliant. A good friend in Missoula has three kids, and when the oldest approached age 16, Paul went to the Chevy/GMC dealer and asked for a beater Suburban. He wanted one with body rust, mismatched body panels, and a few large dents and scratches. He said that when that Suburban came to a 4 way stop, no one would move -- the Suburban always had the right-of-way. Paul said that everyone in Missoula recognized it as "a car that wasn't afraid to take a lick!" All three kids drove it until they left for college.

My 9 year old is already picking out her car. She wants a new Nissan Sentra. I said ok, she can have a new (2013) Nissan Sentra in 2023.

Go for the Honda best bet if you can find one sounds like Mark got you going in the right direction have a friend who put 300k on a civic plus they are pretty safe because kids use them as bumper cars. Only other thing to be aware is that a lot of cars are coming from the East that has been under water my friend removes dents from car, trucks starting to see more and more check under the carpet for mud & undercarriage if buying from a dealer been routing thru Canada coming here with a clean title instead salvage, there is still a shortage of used cars or should i say good ones just my 2 cents worth Jeff

That's the kind of mathematics already running through my head for our 5 1/2 yrs old. I'm try to drag a new purchase out for another year or two so it can be her first car when the time arrives.

Thanks for all the ideas and encouragement and entertainment!

Finding a car like Mark's Mother's is what every Dad in my shoes hopes for, but I hope she keeps her independence for as long as safe and possible!

I feel your pain. Believe me, my sphincter still hasn't relaxed from my last training "ride" with my duaghter a couple days ago. Back when I took driver's ed we were in a parking lot for a few weeks before hitting the road. Here, they just hit the road first thing. Luckily the local casino has a big parking lot.

My daughter's idea of a great first car started with those like you see on Sweet 16 on MTV....yeah right. It then was "downgraded" to a corvette...reality check in aisle 4 please. Her new fav now is a Mini Cooper.

Tell you what...I'm thinking something with a lot of steel, maybe some dents, but a good runner but not until she gets a summer job.

Anyone have a Plymouth Grand Fury or Ford LTD?

Something like this (this one is too far & too much$) or an earlier 140 series Amazon, should be able to find one for 3-5K in good shape; they'll run forever and are very safe, despite lack of airbags. http://bringatrailer.com/2013/04/23/original-paint-1979-volvo-240-4-speed-wagon/

An alternative that's as safe and handles even better in snow/ice: http://bringatrailer.com/2012/11/13/1982-peugeot-505-s-turbodiesel/

Or you could buy this and give her your driver :D. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1979...1?ViewItem=&item=251266010641&forcev4exp=true

I think Yellowlab has a good idea, those Crown Vic's will get 20-25 mpg. Of course, your daughter will hate you.

when i was 16 i had to get a job, and had to buy my own car. i had to pay for insurance, and after gas, i didnt have any left for beer (hmmm...) my parents didnt give me much that i didnt need, but they certainly could have. it was a 14 year old 1968 plymouth wagon we called the millenium falcon. paid a few hundred for it. princess leah wouldnt have been seen in it, but there was room for 12 wookies, and yours truly. it could have survived a run in with the deathstar.
