The web killed fly fishing as we knew it. Technology marches on...

I don't know...technology has helped me catch more fish, meet many great people, explore more water, and get more involved with conservation through what I have learned on this internet forum.

i think what he may have been saying is that through the interwebs, people are going out and catching fish based on easy to get information, rather than the school of hard knocks like has been done over the decades.

I notice the people who support the "school of hard knocks" have all graduated. Why would you want to force other people to learn things the hard way? That is not generous and not in the spirit of fly fishing as advocated by most members of thios site.

And before anyone starts in on me personally I am 57 years old and nobody took me fishing as a kid. I learned it the hard way from bait fishing up to flies, and while most of it was fun it would have been more fun with some helpful advice and guidance along the way. That's why I come to this site.

nothing wrong with a little of both.... there's still a LOT of information you're not going to learn until you actually get out and do it. but it's good to do a little research and brain picking to get a start on something new. i grew up in eastern washington where i learned to fish with no internet help, and since i've been over on this side of the mountains, this site has helped me greatly in getting a start on finding fish over here.

You get a lot of bad info on the internet as well. It kind of balances out "The school of hard knocks" disadvantage. I'm also starting to think that the guys who would have been too lazy to do the legwork in the first place usually give up after a handfull of skunkings anyway.

I've been out at Picnic point the last 2 nights and it hasn't been that bad. I get there around 3-3:30. I've had a few on, but inexperience has left me emptyhanded so far. Tonight I will be back down there. The people I've met down there have been decent, although there were a few snagging.

Keep at it. You'll get it figured out. :beer2: Never understood people snagging pinks. It's a helluva lot eaiser to hook them legally than the "SanFrancisco hookup"

I caught one today! 3rd cast out this morning. Fly was embedded in the tongue, and it was a variation I made of a clouser. So much more rewarding to know that it went after my fly instead of snagging.

What exactly is meant by a "San Francisco hookup"? I grew up there and spent many an hour fishing the Bay and Nor Cal rivers and have never heard the term. I don't see the connection between San Francisco and snagging. Please explain.
