I know your frustration as you may have read above, I've had loads of emails totally ignored by him having bought the rod in early June. I was told it would arrive later that month. I'm totally disgusted, as I got it for my Dad as a birthday present and as a thankyou for taking me fly fishing since I was a child. Not even an email since June to explain the reason for the delay.

He's going to single-handedly damage the reputation of rod builders abroad if this continues. If you check out the fly fishing forums in the UK, you will see how these antics are being conceived and it's not pretty. People are afraid to take the risk now and are saying they won't buy custom online. Although, I accept this is unfair as there are alot of great, credible and honourable guys out there.

Fly fishermen and fly craftsmen are generally a noble breed and, like you, I like to trust people. This really has saddened me.

I actually spoke to Dave by phone from Australia a week or so ago. He assured me that the rods are being built but has a backlog of orders to fulfill.....sound familiar. I think we just have to be patient, especially when half way round the world away. If I was living within close proximity, I'd definitely pay him a visit. I guess if he had intentions to do the wrong thing by us, he wouldn't answer the phone or make himself invisible. I still have faith that my rod will arrive at some stage but hope I'm not too old to enjoy it!

Hi Richard, yeah, the distance is frustrating, I'd definitely do the same. Did he give a timeframe?

    Hi Gez,
no timeframe, just said he'll get onto it but he's very busy. I reckon he must have a huge backlog to do, so won't hold my breath. I'll call him again in a couple of weeks time if necessary.

The way I see it, he has garbage bags full of excuses as to why these rods are not already in our hands. I would be at bay for a while if he had responded to my last couple inquiries. And if he just flat out asked me if he could have until the end of the year to finish up my rod, I would agree.

He reminds of that friend we all have - the one that tells their wife they are on the way home, when really he's sitting at the bar with no intentions of coming home until morning.

I don't agree with the part where he gets paid 100% upfront. It leaves no incentive for him to hurry up and pony up the goods.

Gez gets my vote for "Understatement of the Day." Post of several UK based boards and when it comes to "Name and Shame" they DO NOT take prisoners. That said, if folks know what County he lives in, and you paid have you considered filing a Small Claims Court action?

    Guys,
Sorry to say but i have aside from 5 rods the other 20 are all custom built .I never had to wait any more than say two weeks from ordered to finished to get any one of my rods, the rodbuilder {not Dave McNeese}always keeps in constant contact with me.Its hogwash to wait a year for any rod that is custom built.
If its anything spey and you want one of a kind top of the line rods , Go with Bob Meiser or Gary Anderson.Aside from that I have bought from Dave McNeese custom flies and some of his new hooks directly of the Fleabay and got them promptly.I didn't have any trouble. Really surprises me that i have read these problems on several differnt forums from other places across the globe.
another thing though is if he is having troubles outside of his business, the proper business etiquette is to contact whomever he has contracts or agreements with and make other arrangements , refund any money if a resoultion can not be resolved and a formal apology should be of the utmost priority.
Now what that said, life sometimes gets in the way..death, illness, divorce, kids ect. one thing i could really impress upon you is that there should be a order invoice always with any order, if thier is a expected delivery date that should expressly and physically be shown on the said invoice, this invoice should be dated too.that is your record of sale, and evidence for any leagal proceedings should it become evident that the other party is negligent in their binding agreement/contract to do any work.
I am not patient with unhonorable individuals, a man's word is his honor if his word isnt any good he isnt a man and thus he isnt any good.

Indeed. "Go with Bob Meiser or Gary Anderson."

I'd add Burkie to that short list "You call, they haul."

    Period.

You want a 'custom rod?' Some suggestions out of Oregon: Gary Anderson aka ACR rods, Bob Meiser aka R B Meiser rods(both more known for their spey rods) or Steve Gotshall (normally known for his custom cut fly lines). You will get exactly what you've asked for (usually after a long conversation on 'Where are you fishing? What are you fishing for? Etc?

Add Steve Moran in Spokane, WA to that list. Very fast and beautiful work.

Dave is a good guy. Flame away.

He has been known to chase butterflies sometimes and may not best business mind nor the most organized person. That being said, Dave is not going to stiff you.

Having one of his rods would be an honor no matter how long you wait. It's the closest you'll ever get to Syd Glasso and the lore of how we came to do what we do here in the PNW...well, some of us anyway who choose not to cast bobbers with a spey rod.

I'm sorry to say this but your sympathy post cuts no ice, as 'Muricans would say. Read this type of 'complaint post' once .. no big deal. Your read six or seven (including on International boards) with the same kind of concerns .... Puppy, for what ever reason, Don't Hunt.

I have no idea what McCheeses problems are, and candidly don't care, but if you can't deliver in a reasonable time frame just say so. Period.

Lots of 'custom builders' (Meiser/Anderson/Burkhiemer(sp?) et al) ... you order... you can count on getting delivery in a timely basis; Dave? Your call .....?
