The best argument for a down locking reel seat came from Lee Wulff. The down locker puts the reel farther (farthest) to the rear of the blank. If you cast with your hand tight against the reel you are effectively casting with a longer lever. If you cast with an uplocking seat, your hand tends to be farther away from a reel that is already higher up the blank which shortens the lever. So with a down locking seat, you are casting with a little longer rod. If you're like Wulff and fished with a 6 ft. rod it probably makes a little difference in casting distance. Trey Combs made an argument for the uplocking seat, but I don't buy it.
    Tight lines,
