IMHO the best ferrules available are hard drawn nickel silver (although you can make a good case for machined durabronze). The process of drawing the tubing to size hardens the metal that improves the feel and lifespan of the ferrules.
Nickel silver ferrules that are machined ferrules start with half hard (or softer) bar stock. This improves machining but these ferrules wear quickly.
There is normally not a huge weight difference between machined and drawn ferrules. It’s simply a matter of wall thickness. So, well machined ferrules should have a similar weight as the drawn ferrules.
CSE are probably the best ferrule that are available to fit your needs. They are made from tubing and soldered together. $65.00 sounds pretty much in line for a quality set of ferrules (for a 2 tip rod).
In practice the ferrules that I draw from mother tube are a bit lighter than CSE ferrules but much harder.
That helps quite a lot, TC. Thanks. Do you sell them? Or, build those type of rods? The ferrules seem more work than hobby.... But that is my layman view.
The male plug on my rod mic's. at 14/64. Everything I find at the rod size are high size at 11 and 12/64. Several 10s; and wt. is 4 and up; not the 3 line that I have.
I agree that ferrules are a lot of work- maybe a labor of love but work none the less. I don't really sell ferrules but I'd be glade to help you work through your project. 14/64 seems large for a 2 piece 3 wt. A 3 piece makes more sense.....
It would help to see a photo of your rod.....
My response was a knee jerk "Oh, a builder! Who?" Thanks for the offer, no need. I will play with this club for a while. Maybe, I can fish it without line
I am sure, in a bigger rod the choice of a ferrule is less critical. After the experience there is more respect for hardware, and smaller rods.
