This was my first time hunting for sage rats. We were south of LaPine, Oregon around Fort Rock. Basically, it was target practice with vermin as targets. The rats themselves vary in size from 4 to perhaps 8 inches. The enjoyment derives the people you are with, the banter and setting since killing a rat is about as challenging as swatting a mosquito. We were using 22 LRs and 17 HMRs for the majority of the shooting. I had a 223 for the long shots, coyotes and badgers. There were a few of these around too. I’d put this hunt in the “go if you are ever invited” category. I would go back and probably will.
