You are of course correct, Ryan. My point is that posting on line that "somebody should do something" doesn't feed the bulldog. In addition to informing others, it's OK to tell vendors and restaurateurs what you think. It is amazing what impact that makes. I do it, and I invite others to do it as well. I should have clarified - I suggest you don't limit your actions to posting on line.

    Better?

Alpinetrout - when I told them (Pike Place Market) what I thought, in person, I waited until there was a crowd in front of the store, and then after I finished my rant with the proprietor, I turned and challenged those within earshot to support the demise of ESA fish by purchasing from a vendor who obviously didn't give a rip. Did it do any good? Probably not. Did it make me feel better? Abso-frickin-lutely.

They must have cut and pasted their response to you in the message they sent me.

Maybe this will be my next approach.

I called another place rumored to have wild steelhead on the menu. Rumor confirmed, manager apologized and said they only provide what the paying customers are demanding to eat. If that does not scream of an uneducated public I don't know what does.

I have a hard time believing that the average uneducated restaurant customer is demanding that they be served wild steelhead. Most people wouldn't think to order it if it weren't for the novelty of seeing something different on the menu.

I completely agree with you on that one alpinetrout. I had to toss in the bullshit flag on that one, but if it is true the patrons of this place demanding wild steelhead they are idiots.

I will send them a god damn e-mail. And I will e-mail the f-ing link to my whole f-ing client list. These guys have been doing this for years. Don't get me started. Years ago a friend of mine did a bunch of research on where these fish were actually coming from. It would make you sick.

This ia copy of the love letter I sent to Pikes Place, it's a first draft, and could probably use some polishing. Tomorrow I'll find the address for Elliott's Oyster House and Boston Harbor Fish Market and copy them too. Know of any other outlets? Send them a copy. I'm waiting for a reply from Oceanwise Canada to gather more infor on how to organize the boycott, but a threat s a good start.

"There is a growing movement throughout the northwest, especially western Washington to prevent the extinction of steelhead and salmon populations. One of the major causes of the demise is non selective harvest of depleted runs for commercial consumption. Legislation to change this trend has stalled, so advocates are organizing to eliminate the market for these fish.

Modeled after a program that is highly successful in British Columbia, the public is being informed of all outlets that purvey wild steelhead and salmon, with consumers encouraged to boycott these businesses entirely until they remove all wild steelhead and threatened stocks of salmon from their inventory. Once these businesses cease selling wild fish and pledge to honor the ethical practice of purveying only sustainable stocks, their names will be removed from the list.

Your business has been identified as one which sells wild steelhead. You are encouraged to voluntarily cease offering wild steelhead, and to inform your suppliers of the reason. Voluntary compliance will remove your name form the pending boycott, and your implicit support will be noted in the announcements."

Pike Place. I started yelling at them ten years ago. Evey few years they get a raft of sneers and jeers from people- usually an internet forum group- about those wild steelhead being sold there- "Tribal caught Wild Steelhead".Yes they are wild fish. And you are correct that they couldnt care less. They are in it for the money. I used to think that we could win this thing for the wild fish on the basis of stepping on this kind of marketing. No doubt we could buy a little time. But overal and long term we will have to work directly WITH the Tribes for the solution. You cant do that with anger. You can only do that with fairness. Otherwise it will just be another stupid and useless chapter in the fish wars, a flash in the pan betwen resentful user groups and resource hacks.

well mr triggs, you have made a HUGE assumption that the tribes want to deal with any of these issues. the fact is, having spent well over an hour with the NWIFC, that they see what they do as an 'entitlement' and you and me and the rest of the non indian population '...don't understand...' time to start protecting fish and let the chips fall where they may.
