This photo was stolen off Instagram by a well known tying company. I’m used to just plucking the CDC off the stems but it uneven. How do you guys get them like this? Thoughts and help is appreciated.

I would guess they're just using the tips of the feathers, including the stem. Notice how the ends of these feathers are pretty even?

find a full feather with nice long barbs. grab the feather by the tip and stroke the barbs toward the tip. You will get enough barbs w/o any stem to make a nice wing. You will go through a few feathers looking for the right one.

There are two types of CDC product, the full feather (with a stem) , and the Puffs (shorter fibers w/o a stem). I would imagine the flies above were tied with the Puff. The Puff makes for nice bushy flies with perfectly even tips.
