Can any west sider locals provide any selective fishery lake ice reports?
Was thinking of trying a lake this weekend but presume they'll need to thaw out for quite awhile.
I didn't expect it either but that ice made for a great little situation until first light. I went back up after Saturday's early feeding frenzy, hoping for more of the same. The edge cut a rather interesting line that created a sort of artificial pond just past the point, maybe 2 acres in size. It was visible from the road and I wondered if all that early activity would concentrate there. Turns out it was one of those times where you happen upon fish in a barrel. Lots of surface rollers and hard hits on the retrieve. Didn't last long, maybe 45 minutes, and by 8:00 or so they had scattered, most making way for the bottom. I love those one-of-a-kind occurrences like that, even if short lived.
I was bummed to miss you on Saturday. troutpocket and I got a later start and missed any early bite that might have happened. We did find fish deep but they were hit or miss except for one spot where I managed to pull out quite a few in one little bucket. Otherwise, slow for us, but not nearly as slow as Lone ended up being the next day. troutpocket and I ended the day with only 5 fish between us (yes, he caught one more than I did with a late miracle of two fish in a 15 minute period at the end of the day).
Tim-It was nice to visit with you, and to visit with Ira as well. Also, nice to meet you Nick! Mostly a family outing for me but Matt (my son in law) and I caught a couple on balance leeches tied with Black/Red Simi Seal at 22'. My 7 yo grandson had fun netting the fish and since we started his day with biscuits and gravy at the Farmhouse Inn, he had a great time!
Bummer, sounds like I missed half my friends that day (TP sorry I didn't cross your path while you were here!). Nick, hope you had a good one up there. Were you in a boat this time?
Spidey, you're like Lue Taylor, I can usually hear you coming. You must've been busy whispering all your secrets to TP. Saw your car but you guys probably got in while I was walking around warming my toes up. It got tough out there after early morning, I saw that happen both days so you weren't missing anything. I'd be curious to know how eves are, as I've only been able to go early. At least while I've been there, they'll come up and get active just before light, then settle deeper down around 8:00 for onesy-twosey fishing until late morning. Then it goes pretty quiet.
Rick, glad I saw you and got to meet Matt and your grandson. Hoping we can get out there some more this year…tell Rick and Scott hi this weekend. Good luck out there, and I'll be really impressed if Scott sleeps on the porch this time of year!
Tim-when I told Scott I had beds for everyone at the cabin his reply was
Beds? I don't need no stinking bed.....so we shall see where exactly he sleeps! Of course with enough red wine and single malt, he can probably sleep anywhere!

I was rowing and I'm out of shape thus the silence. It sounds like we missed all the good action early. As I said before I found one bucket of fish that lasted for about a half hour but other that that it was slow until right at evening and then Nick found another bucket that I was able to pull a few out of as well.

Tim, I was fishing out of my 10' aluminum pram. I'm pretty sure I rowed by you bear the point around eight or eight thirty. You were near the point and worked your way to the road side as I was passing you. I thought I recognised your rig parked where you usually park, so I was keeping an eye out but I didn't think it was you because I watched you fish and it seemed
that whoever I was watching was trolling and I didn't figure it was you. But thinking back now I'm pretty sure it was.
I ended up with decent numbers... somewhere around 14-15 fish to the boat, but most of then came in two distinct periods of activity. Rick, glad I saw you and got to meet Matt and your grandson. Ira-Come to think about it, it was you at the 4th Corner Fly Fishers talking about balance leeches that got me started on that! (and Tim's favorite fly is a Simi-seal leech), so putting the two experts of Pass Lake together I just had to tie some up! BTW-Thanks to both of you for super presentations to our club! Rick
I tied a balance leech with the black/red simi-seal material at the meeting. By the way, today is the day to fish the lake if you can. I have a strong feeling that the fish will be stacked upped today on the shore where the wind is hitting.
Well on the east side it's colder than a witch's tit!!!!!!!! Chances of fishing this week not good..........
